LEXINGTON, Ky., --The Kentucky Proud Evenings series continues Monday, June 24, when Dan and Judy Dourson discuss the great diversity of both common and rare flora in the Greater Red River Basin. The Fayette County office of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service hosts the free monthly series, which celebrates Kentucky’s rich literary and food culture with author discussions and samples from Plate It Up! Kentucky Proud recipes.

The Doursons are the authors of “Wildflowers and Ferns of Red River Gorge and the Greater Red River Basin” and “Wild Yet Tasty: A Guide to Edible Plants of Eastern Kentucky.” “Wildflowers and Ferns of Red River Gorge” is the first book specifically devoted to the biodiversity of the Red River watershed and uses more than 1,000 color images and illustrations to cover the more than 1,500 species known to exist there.

Dan Dourson is a wildlife biologist who worked with the U.S. Forest Service, specializing in nongame management in Red River Gorge. He has written 10 books. Judy Dourson is an educator, researcher, field technician and editor. She has co-authored several books with Dan.

“No preparation or prior reading is required. The Red River Gorge draws people from all over who wish to experience its geological beauty, flora and wildlife. The Doursons’ presentation will be an illuminating evening, whether you’re an experienced Gorge visitor or brand-new to the area,” said Liz Kingsland, Fayette County family and consumer sciences extension agent.

Kentucky Proud Evenings begin at 6 p.m. at the Fayette County Extension office, 1140 Harry Sykes Way in Lexington.

Make reservations for the event by calling the Fayette County Extension office at 859-257-5582. Dan and Judy Dourson will be signing copies of their books, which will be available for sale that evening.
