Jordan McDowell, a 2014 alumnus of the University of Kentucky, has always been interested in the ways having a child with a chronic illness affects families. Part of this interest comes from his own experience with sickle cell disease. As an undergraduate, McDowell studied family science and earned a minor in psychology; he volunteered with the American Cancer Society and was involved with DanceBlue.

The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment today inducted five new members into its Hall of Distinguished Alumni. This year’s recipients include a farm advocate, an engineer, two economists and a family and consumer scientist.

A century ago in Mercer County, University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension welcomed its first African-American agriculture agent, Ananias Lorenzo Garvin.

UK family sciences doctoral student Alex Elswick hopes to use his own story and his research on barriers to long-term recovery to help those overcoming substance abuse addiction.
