Kentuckiana Dairy Exchange offers forum for idea sharing

The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture is partnering with Purdue University to offer the third annual Kentuckiana Dairy Exchange. The two-day meeting will give dairy producers an opportunity to visit other dairies and learn the latest from UK and Purdue specialists Aug. 3 and 4 in Russellville.Dairy specialists from both universities believe Kentucky and Indiana producers share many common challenges and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.

Presentations will feature reproduction economics, transition cows, and harvesting and storage equipment. Participants will have a chance to tour local dairy enterprises including JP Robertson Dairy, home to 200 Holsteins, featuring a renovated parlor and pedometers; Sam Coblentz Dairy, home to 90 Holsteins, featuring a compost bedded packed barn; Jimmy and Mary Lou Wright's Dairy, home to 320 Jerseys, featuring a freestall barn and a renowned forage management system; Robey Family Dairy, home to 1,300 Holsteins, featuring recently expanded calf facilities and Chaney's Dairy Barn, a Jersey dairy with agritourism programming and ice cream.

Registration will begin at 1 p.m., Aug. 3 at the Logan County extension office. For more information, a registration form is available at http://www.uky.edu/Ag/AnimalSciences/dairy/2010KYINExchange.pdf. Pre-registration is due July 15 and is $25 per person.

The Logan County extension office is located at 255 John Paul Road, Russellville, between traffic lights 7 and 8 on the U. S. 68/KY80 bypass. The building has a distinctive UK-blue roof. It is very easy to see from the bypass. More detailed directions are included in the brochure.
