A unique event open to cattle producers will offer perspective on all cattle industry segments including production practices, marketing and end product merit. The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture in partnership with the American Angus Association and the Angus Foundation will conduct a Cattlemen's Boot Camp Sept. 21 and 22 at the Fayette County Cooperative Extension office in Lexington. The Boot Camp, beginning at noon on Friday, Sept. 21, is designed for new and veteran cattle producers alike. First topics of discussion will include the present and future of the beef industry and consumer beef preferences. After a short bus ride to the UK College of Agriculture meats lab, participants will learn hands-on about economic differences in carcasses and quality and yield grade determinations. After dinner, conference organizers will present a case study entitled “It’s Sale Time.”Boot Camp continues bright and early at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22 with breakfast and sessions on such topics as “Repro/Making Estrus Synchronization Work,” “Economics and Cow Herd Nutrition,” “Source and Age Verified Cattle Programs,” “Producing High Quality Beef” and a question and answer period. Although Boot Camp officially adjourns after lunch, Angus Association members may chose to participate in an optional workshop. Registration for Boot Camp is $75, which includes meals and materials.
