University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service agents in Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Jefferson, Jessamine, Scott and Woodford counties are teaming up to host their annual "Pastures Please Etc." meeting for horse owners and farm managers interested in the latest information about horse pasture management. The event will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1 in the Scott County Extension Center, 1130 Cincinnati Rd., Georgetown.

"With the weather we experienced in late summer and early fall 2010, equine owners have a lot of questions about the conditions of their pastures. This meeting will give them an idea about what they might encounter in the spring and will offer recommendations to help restore and improve their pastures," said Nick Carter, Fayette County agriculture & natural resources agent. "We will have presentations on pasture management, weed control and fertility recommendations. It is a timely topic because the time to implement these practices is just around the corner."

Topics include equine pasture establishment after a dry summer and fall; potential problems and control of weeds after a dry summer and fall; horse pasture fertilization and other fertilizer concerns; emerald ash borer and a roundtable discussion and question-and-answer session.

"On behalf of the Equine Initiative, we thank the county agents for programs like ‘Pastures Please,' which are designed to answer horsemen's questions about pasture management. We depend on agents greatly to let the on-campus community know the needs of the horsemen, and they do a great job," said Nancy Cox, associate dean for research in UK's College of Agriculture, Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station director and administrative leader for UK's Equine Initiative.
