Published on May. 5, 2010

With the 2009 outbreak of Fusarium head blight still fresh in many wheat growers' minds, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture specialists will discuss ways to best manage the disease during the 2010 UK Wheat Field Day.

The UK Wheat Science Group, which hosts the annual field day, has set this year's event for 8:45 a.m. CDT to noon on May 18 at the UK Research and Education Center Farm in Princeton.

In addition to discussing the management of Fusarium head blight, UK specialists will give presentations on the latest information in wheat production.

Topics include results from the latest UK wheat variety trial, fertilizer sources and additives, an update on wheat response to ALS-inhibitor herbicides and topdressed nitrogen, the effectiveness of early fungicide applications, drying the 2010 wheat crop, wheat row spacing update, the evaluation of a new phosphorus source and current trends in the world wheat market.

The following continuing education units for certified crop advisors are available: 1.0 in pest management, 1.5 in crop management, 0.5 in nutrient management, 0.5 in professional development. Pesticide applicator continuing education units for 1 general hour and 1 specific hour in categories 1A, 10 and 12 also are available.

Preregistration is not necessary, and the event is free to attend. Lunch will be provided by the Kentucky Small Grain Growers Association.
