Meeting to focus on grain storage issues

The Feb. 28 meeting will cover potential issues that may arise from holding grain for extended periods.

PRINCETON, Ky.—

Tight marketing conditions have caused many growers to store larger amounts of grain for longer periods. To help producers work through some potential grain storage issues, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment specialists are hosting the Postharvest Grain Management Meeting Feb. 28. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. CST at the Daviess County Extension office in Owensboro.

During the meeting, specialists from the UK Grain and Forage Center of Excellence will discuss ways to minimize postharvest storage issues with grain, such as mycotoxins, insects and other biological activity, and maintaining grain quality through increasing storage periods. Additionally, specialists will touch on present market prices and the potential for profitability of the old and new corn crops and potential tools for risk management.

The meeting will include lunch for participants. Pesticide applicators can receive one general and three specific credit hours in categories 1B, 10 and 12. Continuing education units for Certified Crop Advisers include three hours for integrated pest management and one hour for crop management.

To register for the event, contact Clint Hardy, Daviess County extension agent for agriculture and natural resources, by Feb. 26 at 270-685-8480 or by email at chardy@uky.edu.
