The University of Kentucky Wheat Science Group will discuss important and timely wheat production topics during their annual field day Tuesday, May 14 at the UK Research Farm in Princeton.

Registration for the free event begins at 8:30 a.m. CDT. UK College of Agriculture Dean Scott Smith will give the welcome. As chair of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, Smith was instrumental in the formation of the group and has continued to strongly support the group’s efforts as dean. 

Tours begin at 9 a.m. UK College of Agriculture wheat specialists will discuss the following topics during the tours:

·         Wheat variety trial and scab smart update

·         Variety specific management

·         Tracking the source of aphid-vectored virus in winter wheat

·         New Greenseeker technology

·         Herbicide resistant weeds

·         Two-year survey of winter wheat’s nutrient status

·         Disease update

·         Possible yield benefit from gypsum

Continuing education credits are available for pesticide applicators for two general and two specific hours in categories 1A, 4, 10 and 12. Certified Crop Advisors can receive 3.5 continuing education units in the following categories: 1.5 in pest management and one each in nutrient management and crop management.

The field day will conclude at noon with a free lunch provided by the Kentucky Small Grain Growers Association.
